What a SIF is
A Specialized Investment Fund (SIF) is a SEBI-regulated product category that sits between a mutual fund and a portfolio management service. It is launched by an existing asset management company under a separate brand, and it is allowed to use strategies that ordinary mutual funds cannot — most importantly, taking short positions through derivatives.
Like a mutual fund, a SIF is a pooled vehicle with a daily or periodic NAV, a registered trustee, and an independent custodian. Unlike a mutual fund, it is aimed at investors who can commit a larger minimum amount and accept a wider range of outcomes.
The investment strategies SEBI has allowed
SIF strategies are defined by SEBI, so the same names appear across fund houses:
- Equity Long-Short — long equity positions with short exposure used to hedge or to express negative views.
- Equity Ex-Top 100 Long-Short — the same idea, but the long book sits outside the largest 100 companies.
- Sector Rotation Long-Short — rotates between sectors, long the favoured ones and short the rest.
- Hybrid Long-Short — equity plus debt, with derivative hedging across both.
- Active Asset Allocator Long-Short — shifts actively between equity, debt, gold and derivatives.
The ₹10 lakh threshold
SEBI requires a minimum investment of ₹10 lakh per investor across all SIF strategies of one fund house (accredited investors are exempt). This is a suitability filter, not a fee tier — it exists so that only investors who can absorb the risk and understand the strategy participate.
You can invest in a lump sum or through systematic plans, as long as the total committed amount respects the ₹10 lakh floor.
Who it suits — and who it does not
SIFs make sense for an investor who already holds a diversified core portfolio and wants a satellite allocation with a different return pattern — one that can protect on the way down and lag in a straight-up market.
They are not a replacement for your core equity funds, not a guaranteed-return product, and not appropriate for money you may need at short notice.
